Experts believe there are 5.5 million homes in England and Wales running the risk of flooding – that's one in six properties. In addition, pay-outs for flooding incidents are also hefty. Insurance firms paid out more than £3 billion for flood damage in 2007, according to trade body the Association of British Insurers.
